This infra-red image highlights a wide range of different
aspects of London and surrounding towns, including urban structures, woodland,
golf courses, water bodies and agricultural patterns.
It was made using data from the Enhanced Thematic Mapper sensor on the Landsat
7 satellite, which orbits the Earth from space at a height of 700km, and is
capable of seeing
objects just 15m across.
This image extract (right) shows the complex agricultural field structure
visible in the poster in blues and greens, with forested areas brown and urban
areas
in grey. The layout of a
golf course can also be clearly identified in the southwest portion of the
image.
An extract of the 1:100,000 Philips road and tourist map is shown to the
left. This popular map can be used to accurately pinpoint places of interest
on the corresponding
image, and makes the image-map pair ideal for educational purposes.
