The Advanced
Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) provides highly accurate
spectral information. However, it has a low spatial resolution
of 1.1 km x 1.1 km and each scene covers a large area approximately
1000 km E-W and between 3000 and 4000 km N-S. The sensor has
five spectral bands ranging from Red to Thermal Infrared and
is suited to environmental applications such as monitoring
large areas of vegetation.
The satellite has a repeat cycle of 12 hours. If an image
is ordered within 1 or 2 days from its acquisition, digital
scenes can be processed and produced within a couple of weeks,
otherwise the images
are temporarily inaccessible for four to six weeks while
they are processed to another format.
