Situated
in a semi-desert environment, Las Vegas is the fastest-growing
settlement in the USA. The dramatic increase in pumping
of groundwater from underground aquifers has resulted
in large-scale subsidence, particularly in the north-west
of the town.
The image above is a 3D visualisation of the Las Vegas
area produced using Landsat 30m colour data merged with
SPOT 10m black and white data, rendered over a 100m digital
elevation model. This image highlights the subsidence
field derived from ERS InSAR and depicts about 9cm subsidence
having occured between April 93 and April 96.
