Rationale
Angola continues to be one of the most prolific countries
in Africa as major discoveries continue to be made in the
deep water Congo basin, including further discoveries for
BP in Block 31, Total in Block 32 and Chevron in Block 14
in 2007. In the current 2007 round, 3 new ultra-deep blocks
are being released immediately to the west of Blocks 31 and
32 plus new shallow water acreage from the southern Kwanza
basin and the offshore Namibe basin. To coincide with Angola’s
2007 licencing round, NPA are releasing their offshore SAR
seep study, now in fully GIS compatible format (fig 1). This
study has recently been upgraded with new compliant data which
has resulted in even higher numbers of repeating oil seeps
in large parts of the region, especially in the deep and ultra-deep
Congo Basin. NPA has coverage for the entire region –
only scenes covering 2007 blocks are shown on fig 1.
Highlights of Angola Study
- Current coverage provides near complete double coverage
with triple in places.
- 644 slicks mapped.
- 139 definite seepage slicks, 156 extremely high confidence
seepage slicks, 221 higher confidence seepage slicks and
117 lower confidence rank 4 slicks indicating definite presence
of oil petroleum systems in certain basins.
- Slick density and slick repeat data.
- Fully digital data available in modular USID format for
large or small areas.
- Opportunity for further interpretation of NPA scenes,
of which 127 have been identified as optimum for seepage
detection.
