North Arabian Platform TM tectono-stratigraphic
Study
The Study continues southward, seamlessly from the Zagros
study and links to the Eastern Arabian Study further to the
southeast, offering a continuous level of detailed interpretation
and format. The study results in a tectono-stratigraphic map
that draws from and improves upon the geological maps of Iraq,
Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. Special attention is paid
to the poorly mapped Euphrates graben in Iraq/Syria, outlining
many previously unmapped structures. A series of reconstructions
based on integration of the satellite imagery with seismic
data show the development of the Euphrates graben fault system
and are extrapolated into less explored regions of Iraq.
The study maps in detail the extents of main structural domains
such as Rutbah Arch, the Euphrates-Anah graben, Sinjar Trough
and the Dead Sea Fault System with its associated pull-apart
basins. The resulting structural domains have been compiled
into a Regional Summary Map that is conceptually similar to
an aeromagnetic basement depth map. All the results are described
together in a report that outlines their evolution and their
development through geological time.
The coverage of the Arabian Plate is completed with the Eastern
Arabian study that explores the structure and tectonic history
of the Rubh al Khali, the Omani foreland fold and thrust belt,
Omani salt basins and the Yemeni Hadhramaut and Masilah basin
domains. Much of the work is derived from interpretation of
well exposed Palaeozoic to Mesozoic outcrop on the margins
of the Rubh al Khali. As with the regions to the north and
northwest, the results are integrated and compiled using geological
maps from Oman, Yemen and Arabia.
Successful extrapolation of the results into the vast sand
sea has been augmented by seismic and potential field data
to produce a regional tectonic domain map that is linked to
those compiled for the Northern Arabian Platform and the Zagros
foreland fold and thrust belt. These have been used to set
up a number of follow-up surveys using more conventional satellite
interpretation and also novel techniques such as Thermal Basin
Screening (TBS, see images) and field validation projects
that measure soil gas concentrations and geomicrobial activity.
