North African Margin Petroleum Systems: A Satellite based
ArcView GIS.
The Project
Combine Landsat TM Mosaic and Free-Air
Gravity
NPA’s North African Margin
Petroleum System ArcView GIS is a series of thematic petroleum
geology layers combined
in an easy-to-use and visually powerful ArcView database.
The data-set covers the entire N. African margin from Morocco
in
the west to the western edge of the Arabian Platform in the
east.
Features:
Comprehensive interlinked layers,
such as: the spatial distribution of the prolific Silurian
Tanezzuft and Devonian Frasnian
source rock units, basin outlines, detailed structural
interpretation, solid geology and the occurrence of known fields
(IHS data).
Also cross-sections and petroleum system stratigraphic
legends of the major basins are linked in.
ArcView interface enabling each layer to be turned on and
off and/or integrated with clients subsurface information.
All of the layers are geo-referenced to ensure positional
accuracy.
Region is sub-divided into 4 map-sheets which have been
the base of a regional compilation of NPA’s structural
interpretations (most of which have been interpreted at 1:500,000
scale or
better).

The ArcView CD contains the following thematic layers:
Base Raster Layer: 300m resolution Landsat TM image mosaic
shaded with a 1 km DEM and integrated with offshore Free-Air
gravity (shaded
with
contoured bathymetry).
Vector Overlays:
Folder 1 (Geology):
1. Summary Structural Interpretation
(based on NPA’s regional interpretations
at a minimum 1:500,000 scale).
2. Solid Geology
digitally complied and reconciled from published
sources.
3. Regional on & offshore tectonics,
with the main tectonic elements, basin outlines
and
nomenclature.
Folder 2 (Hercynian structure):
1. Depth to Hercynian Unconformity
2. Palaeozoic
outcrop.
Folder 3 (Palaeozoic Petroleum Plays):
1. Distribution of Silurian Tanezzuft source.
2.
Distribution of Devonian Frasnian source.
3. Distribution
of Triassic- L. Jurassic salt limit (seal).
4. Mesozoic
depocentres.
5. Tertiary depocentres.
Folder 4 (Elevation data)
1. 1 km graded onshore
terrain elevation data.
2. Offshore GEBCO bathymetry
(100m contours).
In all folders:
1. Stratigraphic cross-sections of the principal
basins / petroleum systems.
2. IHS Energy data, concessions,
fields and wells.
Areas Available:
Sheet 1: Morocco & W. Algeria.
Sheet 2: E. Algeria & Tunisia.
Sheet 3: Libya.
Sheet 4:
Egypt. Algeria is available as a single sheet at 1:3M.
All of the products also come in hardcopy. Version 2 (coming
soon) will feature Mesozoic Petroleum Plays as Folder 5 of
the ArcView project.
Hardcopy Prints:
A single 1:5 M scale image mosaic of the N. African margin.
Four image map sheets at 1:2 M scale with inlaid structural
interpretation.
All of the above as 1:5 M scale paper/film overlays.
Report summarising the petroleum systems of each basin.
