Exploration in the Zagros Region

Landsat Mosaic of the Zagros region

NPA has launched a new Zagros study that will combine the skills of the companies to guide exploration in the Persian Carpet region. In addition to NPA’s regional interpretation, the new study will incorporate more detailed structural analysis of fold growth, fold-fault linkage, the role of decollement and fault reactivation and consideration of whether thick or thin-skinned models can best describe the deformation imaged at the surface. Where possible these themes will be illustrated using 3-D perspective views, detailed image analysis and by comparison to worldwide analogues.

Offshore Basin Screening in the Zagros Region

These themes will be fed back into a petroleum perspective to provide the subscriber with a structurally up-to-date look at the petroleum prospectivity of the Zagros region. The customer can engage this level of service at either regional or more focused, licence block scales. The onshore interpretation forms the basis of NPA’s new Persian Carpet study, which combines Offshore Basin Screening (OBS) and Thermal Basin Screening (TBS) technologies into the regional Petroleum assessment.

Zagros TM tectono-stratigraphic Study

Zagros Tectono-Stratigraphic Interpretation of Landsat TM data

The study extends from the Lut Block in SE Iran to the Mosul Block in northern Iraq. It covers the internal as well as the external zones of the thrust-system and maps structures not present on the NIOC maps. Stratigraphy from these and Iraqi maps have been integrated into the study to provide a highly detailed continuous and consistent geological map of the entire Zagros Mountains.

The study identifies previously unmapped structures in the Fars Simple Fold belt, such as N-S reactivated basement faults, and in the Dezful and Kirkuk Embayments where we have mapped subtle structures not evident from the ground. The nature of the thrust system and the different types of related structure (imbricate stacks to simple detachment folds) are shown and described using contemporary fault-related fold geometries and concepts. These ideas are illustrated as a series of regional cross-sections. Also discussed are the reasons for the concentration of hydrocarbons in the Dezful and Kirkuk Embayments and the role of N-S basement structures in segmentation of the thrust system.
