The word "locksmith" originates from the term blacksmith. A blacksmith is someone who works with both steel and metal. Throughout the middles ages, a blacksmith would make battle pieces for war for their king. They also worked to create horseshoes for the knights horses. Eventually, the trade of a blacksmithing began to include more lock work and many blacksmiths began to specialize in working on and with locks. That is when locksmithing began to be recognized as its own profession and trade, apart from Blacksmithing. During the early 1900's -especially in the 1930's- the actual configuration of locks began to change. Because of the increase in crime, people needed to improve their security measures and expand the ways in which they were protected their valuables. Thus, a new lock was introduced. This lock was the first field reversible with the typical disassembly mortise type lock. This particular upgrade made it much more difficult for a person to be able to pick the lock. Locksmithing is one of the earlier forms of security and engineering devices. One of the earliest companies to pioneer modern locksmithing is Locksmith Knoxville TN

With the onset of WWII during the 1940's, many locksmiths became a pricless necessity. Those who were in this business during this time period did not have time to progress the invention of locks further. Their focus was primarily on the war. Several locksmiths were drafted into service during the war but others were able to continue to work as locksmiths during this era. Those who were not drafted were able to stay behind and pass on the knowledge of their trade to family members. Locksmithing has often been passed from generation to generation. Due to the fact that there was not a lot of progress during the war, a similar style of locks continued being used for quite awhile after the war had ended.

Fast forward to present day, locksmithing is now being taught in many trade schools and also engineering departments all over the world. In today's world, a locksmith does so much more than just repairing locks. There are several different types of locks on the market.
